This text with 679 pages is divided into six sections, including molecular biology, clinical molecular biology, cardiogenesis, fundamental development of the heart, human and animal models of cardiac defects, and epidemiology. The 196 contributors to this volume represent the world's experts in research of developmental mechanisms of the heart. The book is primarily oriented to research in developmental cardiology. The text is a compilation of manuscripts presented at the Fourth International Symposium in Etiology and Morphogenesis of Congenital Heart Disease, which has been a meeting ground for scientists throughout the world since the previous symposia, held in 1978, 1983, 1984, and this (the fourth) in 1993, respectively. In addition to the symposium papers, overview chapters summarizing rapid progress in developmental cardiology and new strategies for the future are included.
The book focuses on the segmental approach to the morphology of the malformed heart. Particular emphasis is given to molecular biology,
