The authors state that the aim for the third edition is "to provide a comprehensive but focused source of information regarding rheumatic diseases of childhood for physicians concerned with the care of such children," a goal that is admirably met. The basic outline of the third edition is similar to its predecessor, with helpful updates. The text continues to be readable and is accompanied by useful and plentiful photographs and tables. The references following each chapter are extensive and current, and a short bibliography is presented in the appendix. The index continues to have occasional lapses. This updated text is a more useful companion to the family practitioner or pediatrician caring for children with chronic rheumatic diseases than its predecessor. Generalists will find this thorough and well-organized text a helpful addition to their reference library.
