“Autism! When did that happen?” I struggled to answer the question posed to me by a shocked staff member at my pediatrician's office who had not seen my daughter in many months. She remembered Katie as a silly, bright, loving little girl. What she saw that day was a 40-minute tantrum because Katie did not want to leave the aquarium in the waiting room. This little girl whose first 2 words were “Da Da” and “Daddy” now viewed her father as nothing more than a ladder in her endless quest to climb. The Katie we had known and cherished had vanished without warning, and I was overwhelmed with sadness.
