Abstract

To the Editor: The current controversy on circumcision involves pediatricians primarily. One of the main purposes of the specialty is the prevention of disease in later life. There is a great deal of evidence in favor of performing this procedure in the newborn period as a preventitive of carcinoma of the penis. There is also a good deal of evidence to indicate that spouses of circumcized males are much less inclined to have carcinoma of the cervix.

In a report of 139 cases of carcinoma of the penis by Shrek,1 not one case occurred in anyone circumcized in infancy, regardless of race. In another series of 88 patients from the Philadelphia General Hospital,2 there was no one circumcized at birth. In fact, the occurrence of penile carcinoma in patients circumcized in the newborn period is such a rarity that they are to be found only as case reports.
