In the December 2000 issue of the ARCHIVES, Young et al1
published an excellent article on alterations of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian
axis in depressed women, with a follow-up commentary by Halbreich.2 In their article, Young and colleagues described
decreased levels of circulating estradiol in the follicular phase of women
with depression. They also report normal frequency and amplitude of the pulsatile
release of luteinizing hormone (LH).
