In Reply We thank Hohenschurz-Schmidt and colleagues for their thoughtful comment on our recent publication.1 They correctly note that the placebo control condition was not well matched to the psychotherapy intervention, pain reprocessing therapy (PRT), in several respects. A placebo control involving more supportive care and time investment and eliciting stronger positive expectations may have yielded larger effects and a smaller incremental benefit with PRT. Yet the relationship between psychological interventions and placebo treatments raises key questions requiring further consideration.
