In a recent issue of the ARCHIVES, Ross et al1 have confirmed that phospholipase A2 (PLA2) levels are elevated in the serum of schizophrenic patients, demonstrated that the elevation is restricted to a novel calcium-independent form of this enzyme class,2 and suggested why some previous assay methods have failed to detect elevated PLA2 levels. This article establishes elevated PLA2 levels as one component of a biochemical phenotype characteristic of schizophrenia, and thus provides a potentially important clue for further research—regardless of whether the elevated PLA2 proves to represent a cause or a consequence of schizophrenia, and regardless of whether it proves to be linked to the underlying disease process or to treatment with neuroleptics.
