The author of this modest but authoritative volume is well known to workers in the field of drug addiction as a clinician and research scientist with great personal dedication to problems which beset the narcotic addict in the United States. The 12 chapters of the book represent Dr. Kolb's 40 years of experience in the field, during which time he has studied addicts in various settings—hospitals, prisons, and in their homes. Over the years he has been closely concerned with furthering the study of addiction in this country as a medical rather than a forensic problem. One of Dr. Kolb's major interests has been the investigation of personality structure underlying the tendency for some individuals to become addicts and subsequently to relapse repeatedly to the use of addicting drugs following withdrawal.
