The title of this book is quite deceptive, since it actually covers a much broader area than pharmacotherapy alone; it also contains clinical and sociological approaches, primarily with a research orientation. The book comprises a series of reports presented at the 1965 meeting of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, intended to illustrate the then current research on depression. Papers presented were selected to represent the viewpoints and approaches of several different disciplines. The papers comprising the chapters of the book, therefore, represent the views and research interests of the contributors, usually frankly guided by their individual interest and theoretical framework. The contributors are all well known in their respective fields, and the presentations are generally authoritative and complete, within the scope of such a broad undertaking. An added bonus is the relatively comprehensive bibliography at the end of each chapter, most useful to workers in other fields.
