Edwin S. Shneidman, PhD, is the editor and a self-designated reviewer of Essays in Self-Destruction.

"Literary and Philosophic Essays," "Sociological and Ethnographic Essays," "Psychological and Psychiatric Essays," "Taxonomic and Forensic Essays" caption the four sections of this book. Dr. Schneidman prefaces each division with comments on content and intent and the point of vantage from which each essayist procedes. Such a descriptive and, at times, critical overview offers the prospective reader choice and direction in the perusal of these essays, seemingly selected at random.

Dr. Norman L. Farberow's excellent article, "Crisis, Disaster, and Suicide: Theory and Therapy," on page 373 is central to the understanding of the organization and Selection of contributors for this volume.
