This is a collection of essays presented under the sponsorship of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and consisting of 34 contributions all of which are supposedly covered under the general aegis of Modern Psychoanalysis. There is a beginning introduction by the editor, Judd Marmor; a section entitled General dealing mainly with theory; a Biological section faithful to its name; a Clinical section which covers a variety of treatment approaches; and finally a section called Culture and Society which primarily deals with nonmedical issues such as law, art, etc. The book is enormous in size, scope, and intent.

As is true of many multiple-author works, the writing is uneven and of variable quality; some excellent and some mediocre. There are some selections which begin with a firm understanding and presentation of psychoanalysis and move out from there to various positions. Among these are Finch and Cain
