This compilation of writings is evidently intended as a tribute to the late Edmund Bergler, as implied in the forward by Madame Bergler, and suggested by the memorial-like inscription on the cover.
One of the more prolific writers in the field, as sharpshooter and scatter-gun operator, he bagged 24 books and over 300 papers, 79 of which are included in this volume. The range of the collection is truly amazing in variability of depth and breadth, covering every imaginable topic from logorrhea to malignant masochism, from Victor Hugo to Alfred Kinsey.
It is difficult to assess a retrospective collection of this sort. Contrasted with more conservative contemporaries and predecessors, Bergler had a boldness of style and imaginative flair for cataloguing unlisted topics for psychologic investigation.
