F ROM 1919 to 1959, the American Medical Association published the Archives of Neurology and Psychiatry. Roy R. Grinker, Sr, MD, joined the editorial board in 1951. In 1956, when the journal instituted separate sections for each clinical science, he edited the Psychiatry Section. There was a large accumulated backlog (I waited 2 years for my precious paper finally to see print in 1958). A further increase of quality submissions rejected solely for lack of space became truly painful for the editors. Their move to publish two entirely separate ARCHIVES was mercifully approved by the AMA.
Grinker, in 1959, thus named and announced the first issue of this journal in-a launching editorial (AMA Archives of General Psychiatry. Arch Gen Psychiatry. 1959;1:17/1-18/2). As he had throughout his life, Grinker, as chief editor, would implement a "broad vision," for psychiatry. He sought a "totally integrated field composed of many part functions
