JAMA Psychiatry is offering a 2-year editorial fellowship position for a qualified individual who will be supported with a small stipend. The fellow will receive hands-on training in the editorial processes and policies of a psychiatry journal and will be well prepared to take an editorial role in a psychiatry or other peer-reviewed journal at the end of the fellowship.
As a journal, we are working to become more inclusive in our authorship and readership, to provide a platform for voices that are not sufficiently represented in our field, and to develop relationships with junior academics from underrepresented backgrounds. We believe that one way to effect lasting positive change is by providing opportunities to such academics to advance their careers and to become leaders within the field. Therefore, we encourage psychiatrists from various underrepresented backgrounds to apply for this fellowship. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, underrepresented in medicine refers to those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population.
The JAMA Psychiatry fellowship is open to psychiatrists or doctorate-level clinicians who are no more than 10 years from their completion of residency/clinical fellowship. Applicants should have an academic position and research experience.
The fellowship is for 2 years starting on February 1, 2022.
The fellow will be a member of the JAMA Psychiatry editorial team and have confidential access to our editorial systems following training and a formal agreement.
Serve as Reviewing Editor for 6 submitted papers per year. Papers will be selected in discussion with the Editor of JAMA Psychiatry. With guidance from the Editor, the fellow will solicit peer reviewers, make decisions, and handle all aspects of the editorial process.
Participate in weekly 1-hour confidential editorial conference calls where discussions take place and decisions are made regarding papers submitted to the journal.
Participate in monthly 1-hour calls with the Editor of JAMA Psychiatry to discuss all aspects of the editorial process.
Complete 1 editorial project per year. This can include writing a Viewpoint article for JAMA Psychiatry or other journal, soliciting articles on a specific topic that is of interest to JAMA Psychiatry, or conducting original research on medical publishing. The project will be selected in discussion with the Editor.
Broaden the JAMA Psychiatry network of contributors, referring junior and midlevel academics with expertise in health inequities/disparities research to contribute to peer review and submit manuscripts.
