Abstract

The presence of Psychopathology among the parents and siblings of hospitalized patients was evaluated using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). Data were obtained from schizophrenic, borderline, and neurotic patients, their mothers, fathers, and siblings, as well as from matched control families. The MMPIs of each family member were scored for the standard clinical scales. Using a multivariate statistic of profile similarity, there were no differences among either the mothers, fathers, or siblings of offspring in the four diagnostic groups. While previous research has shown that these families can be differentiated on the basis of deviant communication, they cannot be differentiated on the basis of self-reports of psychiatric symptoms.
