The objective of our article was to present an introduction to propensity score analysis using a common problem in general surgery. The presence of prior large observational studies and small prospective randomized studies allowed us to present the results of propensity score analysis in context with these prior results. Thus, surgeons could compare findings from methods with which they were more familiar with findings from this new form of analysis.
