Dr Bach has correctly cited research demonstrating that anti-infectives impregnated on antibiotic- or antiseptic-coated central venous catheters are eluted into the surrounding liquid and solid media used in catheter culture techniques, and he suggests that this must be considered when interpreting culture results. He and others recommend that inhibitors of the anti-infectives must be added to the culture media to avoid underestimation of bacterial colony counts.1,2
