Resilience, an individual’s ability to bounce back after adversity or failure, has recently become an important topic in health care because of its inverse relationship to burnout.1-4 Much has been written about the factors that promote resilience,5-9 which include self-regulation, realistic optimism, grit, and a strong social network. These factors are vital, but they don’t get to the source of resilience.
