Approximately 64 000 people died from drug overdose deaths in 2016, and many of these deaths involved opioids.1 Opioid prescribing decisions are a major contributor to the ongoing opioid crises in America. Prescription opioids are by far the most commonly misused opioids, and 88% of people misusing prescription opioids obtained these medications from 1 physician (35%) or from a friend or relative (53%).2 The duration of opioid use following surgery may be a critical determinant to the development of chronic opioid use, which is then associated with an increased risk of patient harm, including the development of misuse, abuse, and addiction.3
