Improving Gender Equality in the Surgical Workplace

To the Editor We welcome the article by Dossa et al,1 which provides further evidence of the extensive and endemic discrimination that occurs toward women in the profession. It further adds to the evidence base of differences in pay highlighted by previous studies in different countries and in both private and state-funded health care systems.2 The data in this study are recent and provide an accurate snapshot of current conditions, while previous authors focused on longer retrospective databases with the obvious limitation of missing current trends. Previous studies found that mortality under a surgeon’s care has 3 times the effect on referral rates should the surgeon be female rather than male.3 Even when adjusted for hours worked, female surgeons are underreferred patients and are less likely to be promoted.
