To the Editor There are 3 stages in the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI)–based decision-making systems. Today, the tech world is in stage II, the stage of general intelligence level. However, most current-generation health care machines and systems are built on narrow-intelligence AI and use reactive type machines, which are still in stage I of evolution. This essentially means there is a lag between technological advances and biologic advances.
There are a number of research studies suggesting that AI can perform as well as or better than humans at key health care tasks.1 Artificial intelligence–based health care solutions today run on narrow AI, which is purely data driven and aims to deliver evidence-based medicine by overcoming human limitations and thus hoping to improve health care outcomes. The algorithms use a statistical technique for fitting models to data and to “learn” by training models with data.1 Therefore, the backbone of AI in this stage of development is entirely based on the big data, data reliability, and its interpretation. This stage does not take into account the outliers who contribute to the small data.
