Caustic esophageal injury remains an unfortunately common event that is difficult to assess and treat. The majority of patients require no aggressive intervention, either during their first hospital admission or subsequently. How to triage patients presenting with an urgent history of ingestion is standardized with guidelines,1 but some smaller hospitals do not have the capability of following such guidelines 24 hours a day, which can lead to a delay in diagnosis and intervention.
