LEON GOLDMAN, "the Coach," was born in San Francisco, Calif, in 1904, 1 of 11 children of parents who had emigrated from Poland. He was raised in Taft, Calif, in the San Joaquin Valley, where his father worked in the oil business. Although he distinguished himself in high school, he frustrated his teachers by changing his date of birth to fit the occasion. His birth certificate had been lost in the 1906 Great Earthquake and Fire in San Francisco. Finally, the principal declared that he had to pick a date and stick to it! Among his many activities, he was a champion member of the debate team, an outstanding football player, captain of the basketball team, and president of his senior class.
