A RAPID and simple method of small bowel anastomosis would be useful in exceptional circumstances, arising, for example, when handling large numbers of battle casualties. Using dogs, I made an attempt to find the least number of sutures which would hold a small bowel anastomosis for healing, yet prevent leakage of clinical significance between widely spaced sutures and other undesirable sequelae.
A random sample of small- and medium-sized mongrel dogs, apparently in good health, was available for the study. Fifty-five experimental suture anastomoses were performed. The small bowel was divided transversely about 60 cm from the duodenojejunal flexure. The circumference of the small bowel at the site of transection was about 8 cm. The bowel then was sutured using an absorbable suture, atraumatic 3-0 chromicized catgut.The experiments were undertaken in two groups (Figure).Group 1.—In the first group, one-layered anastomoses were constructed.
