This amply illustrated manual covers technical aspects of hemodialysis in a thorough and organized manner. The illustrations are exceptionally clear and are probably the greatest contribution of the book, which suffers somewhat from its telegraphic format. It is an easily readable manual and should prove a worthwhile introduction to patients, technical staff, and physicians who wish a simplified approach to a complicated field. There is little attempt to discuss the physiological basis of hemodialysis, and, therefore, little to interest anyone experienced in this field. The appendix contains a drug dosage summary for renal failure, several diets, and the inevitable manufacturer and distributor list, of practical value. In addition there are 46 pages of general references on the artificial kidney that seem complete. This should be especially valuable to physicians setting up a new hemodialysis unit and wishing to provide reading material for the trainees.
