This massive two-volume work edited by Robert Turell, MD, Diseases of the Colon and Anorectum, is an excellent one. In 1,340 pages, the entire subject is covered with utmost completeness.

In spite of a large number of contributing authors, Dr. Turell has managed beautifully to give unity to the two-volume work so that it flows easily and with good continuity. The many illustrations add clarity to the text.

The work is divided into six parts: (1) applied basic science; (2) diagnosis; (3) anesthesia; (4) colorectal lesions; (5) anorectal lesions; and (6) special considerations. The early sections deal with embryology, anatomy, physiology, and endocrinology. There is a short chapter on immunology as it pertains to colonic lesions, viz, ulcerative colitis. There is a good section on antibiotic treatment in surgery of the colon from the Cincinnati group. Dr. Turell's discussion of adenomas of the colon and rectum is particularly complete and
