Although the title includes the word juvenile, in fact this book covers all other forms of aseptic and avascular necrosis as well as that group of adolescent conditions called osteochondritis. But there is one curious omission—Scheuermann's disease of the vertebral apophyses is not included and the reader is referred to volume 6, part 1 which is "in preparation." The reason for this omission is said to be that Scheuermann's disease has a hereditary and constitutional foundation and thus is not a true osteochondritis. This must represent a German viewpoint, because most English-speaking authorities consider it a part of the large spectrum of conditions that afflict the epiphyses in adolescence and hence to be an "osteochondritis."
The book is laid out on an anatomic basis initially, although osteochondritis dissecans is considered separately. Each condition is considered under a number of subheadings and a typical example would have the following divisions: synonyms,
