This mechanically well-organized and attractive volume (59 color plates, 283 figures) is a revised and expanded version of Dr. Helfet's extraordinarily successful monograph, The Management of Internal Derangements of the Knee, published in 1963. The author is quite obviously one of an unfortunately diminishing species of careful clinical observers whose motto is "to see and ponder," not merely to "look." Dr. Helfet defined the complex, three-dimensional kinematics of the knee before the advent of recent, sophisticated electronic measurement techniques (which have, as yet, added little information to his original descriptions), and correlated altered mechanics with physical and operative findings of internal derangement of the knee joint. For this, many practicing and resident orthopedic surgeons are in his great debt, this reviewer among them.

The revised work has added 12 chapters on various aspects of basic scientific knowledge applicable to the knee joint (eg, biomechanics, microstructure, and biochemistry of cartilage, and
