Abstract

This book, the ninth in a series, entitled Recent Advances in Surgery, is an attempt on the part of the editor to include subjects where there has been a "complete change of approach, those in which the pattern of treatment has now emerged clearly and finally, I have included descriptions of new techniques which seem to me to have reasonably wide applications in surgery."

Hence, subjects from portal hypertension to regional renal hypothermia to Système International d'Unités (SI) have been included.

This noble effort has succeeded to the extent that the contributors are recognized as international authorities in their fields. However, with such a potpourri it is hard to imagine that it would be a particularly useful book for the average surgeon and unnecessary for the specialist. One is left with the conclusion that this edition should probably join the previous eight on the shelves of reference libraries where a
