This fifth volume resulting from Veith's justly popular annual symposium provides a sound overview of all the major aspects of peripheral vascular surgery and does a good job of putting a proper focus on new issues.
It must be a sign of our times that four of the six chapters in the first section, "Important Issues and General Advances in Vascular Surgery," are devoted to economic issues. The first chapter, by Hugh Trout III, MD, is devoted to health policy and should have a much wider distribution than the surgical audience who will read this book. It provides a sound perspective on the current status of legislative gyrations and the problems associated with attacking the real issues in health care. I hope that the physicians who read it will use it to educate their patients and their friends about the folly of poorly conceived solutions to ill-defined problems. Other issues
